Elephant Pepper is a fairly traditional style, located in a grove of tall diospyrus and warbugria trees. The latter is the tree (common all over the Mara) from which this camp gets its initially puzzling name, it bears a plumlike fruit, which appeal to elephant and baboon, so during fruiting season, elephant are regular visitors in the area.

The tents at Elephant Pepper are lined up, fairly close together, very much in amongst the trees,

but each tent has a clear view onto the adjacent plains. Tents at Elephant Pepper are large and spacious with ensuite bathrooms. Loos are flush ones and showers are from a bucket, but operated conventionally inside. The honeymoon tent is palatial and Ottoman in style - two tone canvas with arched openings giving a sweeping panoramic view of the surrounding plains and distant hills.

Elephant Pepper is located in the Koiyaki group ranch, one of the Mara Conservation Areas,

so this is somewhere you can expect less traffic than you might see in the Mara National Reserve. Generally ther gme is less concenrrated but it is still good, although apparently more shy of vehicles. This wasn't our experience of the group of four lion we met a few 100 yards from camp, who appeared unable to summon up the energy to so much as look at us, much less run away. Walking and night game driving are both possible while at Elephant Pepper.
