Though most people are anxious to maximize their time in the bush and leave Nairobi as soon as they can, there are good reasons to do a bit of time in the city.

Langata, the local area for House of Waine, is a well appointed suburb which despite its clipped hedges, and big gates is definitely African. For a start, the odd leopard still eats somebody's dog, the birds are great, and there are havens for wildlife round and about. Nairobi game park, one of the few places you'll see a black rhino in Kenya is on its borders. Nearby, Daphne Sheldrick's elephant orphanage and the giraffe centre are well worth seeing, for that up close "Daktari" feeling.

If you're sick of the ubiquitous curio centres, dotted around the suburb are a number of craft centres full of fun original stuff,

and in Karen (named after its most famous colonial resident Karen Blixen), there's a proper shopping centre with some rather swanky shops of locally designed jewellery, furnishings and clothing. Karen's also quite good fun for ogling the residents, a mixed and eccentric bunch who centre on the Karen dukas (Kiswahili for shops) for ample provisioning on food , booze and gossip.
