![]() Though most people are anxious to maximize their time in the bush and leave Nairobi as soon as they can, there are good reasons to do a bit of time in the city.Langata, the local area for House of Waine, is a well appointed suburb which despite its clipped hedges, and big gates is definitely African. For a start, the odd leopard still eats somebody's dog, the birds are great, and there are havens for wildlife round and about. Nairobi game park, one of the few places you'll see a black rhino in Kenya is on its borders. Nearby, Daphne Sheldrick's elephant orphanage and the giraffe centre are well worth seeing, for that up close "Daktari" feeling.![]() If you're sick of the ubiquitous curio centres, dotted around the suburb are a number of craft centres full of fun original stuff, and in Karen (named after its most famous colonial resident Karen Blixen), there's a proper shopping centre with some rather swanky shops of locally designed jewellery, furnishings and clothing. Karen's also quite good fun for ogling the residents, a mixed and eccentric bunch who centre on the Karen dukas (Kiswahili for shops) for ample provisioning on food , booze and gossip.House of Waine home page
