![]() The main reason to be at Il Moran, or any of the Governors establishments is the location. As it's in the Maasai Mara Game Reserve the game concentrations are generally much higher, especially of big cats, which don't like living near Maasai villages, and prefer the longer grass - uncropped by cows - of the reserve for hunting. Il Moran is also only twenty minutes from the best parts of the Mara River to see the Migration crossings - the places where at particular times of year the huge herds of wildebeest and zebra plunge across the river, running the gauntlet of the river's famously huge crocodiles.![]() The wider Governors area is beautiful, and full of game, and the site of Il Moran is lovely. It curls around the bend of the thick brown Mara river, which at this point is in a fairly deep - about thirty feet - gorge. A great spot for hippopotamus watching, their magnificent grunts and belching groans become a familiar sound after a while. Most of the time they wallow, just a large pair of nostrils visible, but you can also see them heaving their massive bulks in and out of the water, en route to or from a night's grazing on the grassy banks.![]() For this reason, at night at Il Moran, you are always escorted by a ranger to or from your tent -hippos are not nice to bump into at night, they can be bad tempered and have huge teeth that they're not afraid to use on anything they perceive as a threat. As the Camp is in the reserve, there's no walking, or night game drives here. Activities are confined to excitement filled game drives, picnics on the plains - and dodging mini-buses.Il Moran Camp home page
