Il Ngwesi is set on a little hill, and the rooms distributed around it -

little paths wind down to each room. If you weren't fit when you arrived at Il Ngwesi, you'd become so after a few days. Cottages here are all very private, with excellent uninterrupted views over the plains to distant hills and mountains. Higher up the hill is a small pool and sunbed area with even larger views. The whole camp has a nice cosy feel.

A couple of the rooms have Il Ngwesi's version of starbeds -

the large double beds have wheels and can be pushed out onto the unroofed decks at the front of the room, so you can sleep with the whole night sky above you. Il Ngwesi is a fine expression of safari style. This is a very marked style which a number of the more upmarket lodges adopt. The way it goes is they gather enormous amounts of fallen wood from the surrounding area which is crafted in lovely or not so lovely ways to make furniture and parts of the buildings structure.

The wood is shown off in all its gnarly twisted beauty and makes for a very organic feel in the buildings at Il Ngwesi.

This method is also touted as very eco - and there may be virtue in that it possibly stops lodge builders cutting down hardwoods to make their places look sexy and natural, but from the sheer volume of safari style places we visited, we couldn't help wondering if there was a single piece of fallen wood left on the ground of Kenya….so where do all the woodlice live now?

Anyway, we digress… Il Ngwesi does indeed have a natural, Crusoe-esque feel to it. It certainly wouldn't keep a prince in the style to which he was accustomed, but that's probably the point.
