You'd think if you came a to community lodge you'd get fairly involved with the community. Very oddly, the lodge charges you extra for a village cultural visit, when you'd think you might be able to just wander in more casually, so it doesn't feel as natural as it should. This is less of a cultural experience than one might initially imagine. Because it only takes twelve to fill Il Ngwesi, it makes it an ideal place to take as a group, which means you can dictate the daily routines. This is a fine freedom - distinct from many camps and lodges, there's no sense of anything pre ordained here. ![]() The most obvious choice of things to do at Il Ngwesi is walking - but here it's not something to be approached lightly -the bush around the lodge is very thick and when we were at Il Ngwesi, there were lots of elephant around, which makes for a high risk factor. With that firmly in mind, your walks aren't just casuals ones with a couple of Maasai and their spears, you also get an armed Lewa Conservancy ranger.![]() Close to Il Ngwesi there are some beautiful sand rivers(seasonal rivers which are dry for most of the year) which cut wide meandering paths through the bush, and are a delight to pad along, not least for the fantastic array of animal tracks you'll come across - from the great wide circles of elephants to those of the tiniest bird.Il Ngwesi also has cars so you can game drive, but as the bush is thick it's quite tough going, but definitely worth getting in a car for is to head off to one of the truly impressive hills in the area for a days climb up to some spectacular views.
