Morning walks are a novelty in Nairobi. From Ngong House Nairobi you can walk out from your delicious breakfast to the Giraffe Centre which is about 30 minutes away through wild gardens.

The centre makes zoos look rather tame; here you, not the keeper, feed the animals as they stretch their heads into the treehouse you're standing in. Giraffes are impressive eaters because they have very long, purple prehensile tongues - quite a sight a close quarters. They are fabulous beasts wholesale, even more so from inches away.

Bored of tall mammals? Look out for Langata warthogs which are nearly tame in this leafy suburb, or just wander around luscious gardens watching sunbirds.

Other things to do in this area which was once - (and still is!) a heartland of British colonial types, include the Karen Blixen museum which is just up the road, or a visit to Karen church, where the victim of Kenya's famous White Mischief murder, Lord Errol , was found dead all those years ago.
