Mike and Judy Rainey have spent much of their lives researching African wildlife in the field, and the style of Ol Kanjau, their tented camp, just outside Amboseli reflects the fact that their interests lie principally on what is outside, rather than within the tents. This is somewhere you come to see Amboseli's wildlife - and particularly its elephant - in the hands of two highly experienced former researchers.

That said, Ol Kanjau is still a comfortable, if traditional safari camp, it has so far simply avoided turning itself into a boutique experience, which we feel is to the Raineys' credit. Principally, Ol Kanjau offers a highly unusual opportunity to observe elephant close up, with someone who really knows his onions. Or his elephants anyway. And that's the other thing about Ol Kanjau, game drives with Mike are principally about Elephants; Mike knows these individuals personally, so he'll gradually get you in amongst them and allow you to observe them from a perspective that few others can give you. Being outside the park, you can walk at Ol Kanjau as well, so this makes for a good contrast with the time spent in vehicles.

Ol Kanjau takes a maximum of 10 people in comfortable Meru style tents with twin comfortable beds and the tent is furnished with rugs, bedside tables, gas lamps and hanging wardrobes. The bathrooms are comfortable without being luxurious; at the back of the tent is a long drop loo and bucket shower. Hot water is provided at any hour of the day or evening.
