Colin Francombe, the owner of Ol Malo, is an honorary ranger. As such, he has a real understanding of the wildlife of this part of Laikipia.

Furthermore, living in what is essentially a Samburu owned community area means that he is more than aware of the requirement to balance the needs of the wildlife of the area with that of the communities to whom this part of Laikipia is home. Staying at Ol Malo and seeing it through his eyes, you can get a fascinating perspective on this harsh landscape and all its inhabitants.

When it comes to going into the bush, there are numerous ways you can do it from Ol Malo;

this is superb walking country, and this is probably one of the best ways to see it for at least some of the time; you needn't do massive hikes, but there's something to be said for being on your own two feet in a landscape of this scale. While you won't be tripping over animals every few minutes, it is a great contrast to rattling around by vehicle and allows you to listen and smell as well as look, not to mention burn off some of your breakfast.

If you don't feel like taking to your own feet, you could always take to someone else's.

We can highly recommend a saunter on one of the camels at Ol Malo. While most people choose to walk beside camels, sitting 12 ft in the air is a wonderful way to commune with nature and their easy rolling motion is actually quite relaxing - for a while. Ol Malo of course offers game drives and there is plenty to see here. Don't of course expect quantities of game to compete with the Maasai Mara, but you should see plenty of animals, most notably some of the strikingly red (from the laterite soil) elephant. Birders will have a field day and even those without much of an interest in birdlife will find it hard to resist species such as the stunning Vulturine Guinea Foul. Ol Malo have some great open vehicles with seats high up in the air for those feeling agile.
