Rekero Kidogo is the sister camp of Rekero Tented Camp. As at main camp, the success of this place is in large part down to how much of themselves the owners - Jackson and the Beatons - put into it. In terms of equipment it's like a smaller and more basic version of Rekero, (Kidogo means small, so that makes sense), but the game experience here is quite a contrast to the main Mara. Being outside the Mara Reserve, you can walk and nightdrive here as well as game driving by day.

At Rekero Kidogo you won't see the wildebeest crossing the Mara River on your door step. You can drive the hour or so to do this, but there's good resident game year round and in the Loita Migration this area is a frenzy of activity. In the early dry season, a few hundred thousand wildebeest pour into Koiyaki from the Loita Hills to the east, while nomadic lion and hyena trail them relentlessly. There are numerous bloody encounters, and this can be one of the better locations in the Mara at that time.

Rekero Kidogo is set, somewhat exposed in amongst a stand of small acacia trees. The camp site itself isn't particularly striking- no river here - and as you approach, the location looks a little random. However, it was chosen for good reasons; firstly there's a small spring set a short distance away to the east, which ensures a steady supply of water, and therefore animals, throughout the dry. Secondly, and rather unexpectedly, Rekero Kidogo has the most fantastic views across the whole of the Mara to the Ololoolo Escarpment in the west.

At Natural High, we've all lived and worked in Africa, so our knowledge is born of hands-on experience rather than simply visiting on holiday. We can't over-stress how worthwhile it is to take a few minutes to call us. We're not in the business of churning out thousands of packages so if you'd like to discuss things in detail, take a few minutes and call Catherine, Vanessa or Alex on +44 (0)1747 898104.

Other than in August, it's rarely cloudy here at night, so, with no tall trees to block the sky, you have a wide-screen view of the firmament. The night sky is definitely a feature of Rekero Kidogo. At full moon you can watch the sun set in front of your tent, while the moon rises on the eastern horizon behind you. Jackson is a keen astronomer and he turns into a Maasai version of Patrick Moore as he guides you from one horizon to another via all the major constellations. This man's capacity to surprise you knows few limits.

The experience at Rekero Kidogo is intentionally in contrast with the one at Rekero Tented Camp and the rest of the Maasai Mara National Reserve, so it does work quite well to mix the two for a few days. You'll find different terrain, quite a few different species such as Aardwolf and the elusive Aardvark, and as you can walk and night drive here, you stand a good chance of finding these nocturnal species.
