Rekero is a well laid out, extremely comfortable, but traditional East African safari camp.

It's one of a shrinking number that haven't been tempted to go down the slippery slope in pursuit of ever increasing luxury. Make no mistake this is a positive decision and is part and parcel of what Rekero is all about.

The tents at Rekero are large and shady - surprisingly cool in the heat of the day,

because they're well tucked in under the shade of the large warburgia trees - and the bathrooms behind are en-suite, but towards the basic end of comfortable. The tents are set along the bank of the Talek River, some a few metres back with a patch of lawn like grass in front (after the rains) and others perched a few feet from the edge, with amazing views down into the river bed. The more distant rooms at Rekero are set amongst some quite thick bush and may be too remote for some, but if you like the feeling of being surrounded by the sounds sights and smells of the bush, then there are few better ways to do this.

The mess tent at Rekero is quite an elaborate structure nowadays -

it manages not to vie with its surroundings, set as it is under some magnificent tall trees, but does provide lots of space for a comfortable sitting area and a spacious dining room. One of the nice things at Rekero is that breakfast and lunch are al fresco, surrounded, by the incessant activity and sounds of the incredible number of bird species.

The interiors of the tents are fairly basic, so, water is provided in various thermoses or flasks, according to what it's for (drinking water, washing etc).

In the evenings hot water is brought to your tent to fill the bucket showers. As always these are surprisingly good, and, if you run out, someone is not far away, waiting to refill the bucket (it came as something of a shock to hear a voice inches away the other side of the canvas asking if I had finished…) Also in your room you'll find powerful solar lamps (although these are due to be replaced by a plumbed in solar sytem) and an airhorn, presumably to make the birds shut up.
