![]() Jackson, one of the directors of Rekero, who is part Dorobo and part Maasai now heads a team of highly charismatic and well informed Maasaiwho are renowned as some of the most competent guides in these parts. With Maasai as your guides, you get a second perspective of the Mara as well as the conventional, western scientific one. These people were born and raised in these parts, so the land and the animals it supports are woven into the fabric of their lives.![]() The promise of staying at Rekero is that you will be shown the parts of the Mara where the bulk of the traffic simply doesn't get to.The Ol Misigiyoi and Meta Plains lie just to the south of Rekero and offer superb game viewing. Animals are slightly harder to find here if you don't know where you're going, but the Rekero guides not only know where to find it, but know many of the individual animals - the Rongai pride of lion, and further to the south east, the skittish “black paw” pride that operate cross-border skirmishes in and out of Tanzania.![]() The time when avoiding traffic becomes nigh on impossible is during August and September, when the wildebeest migration floods in from the Serengeti. This is river crossing season and it's this spectacle, of course, that many people are here to witness. Substantial river crossings happen just a few metres from Rekero on the Talek River, but if you're looking to see the wildebeest and zebra tangling with gargantuan crocodiles (and let's face it, this is what most people are here for) then you need to be on the Mara River. However, while it's virtually guaranteed that you'll see other vehicles, Rekero are well versed at avoiding the major traffic jams, by using crossing points beyond the reach of the big lodges, or simply by being much more flexible.![]() Rekero is clearly about more than game drives, and, as all the guides here are Maasai, you're able to get an interesting, and purposefully low key, cultural experience. The guides will take you to their own villages and you'll actually meet people, rather than just looking at them. This is a great chance to chat, and the flow of information is definitely two way - so get ready to answer some searching questions.Rekero Tented Camp home page
