Saruni is definitely another expression of safari chic.

The classic thatched roofs are the relatively ordinary bits - underneath them the stilted rooms have conventional square plastered walls at the back and unusual canvas walls at the front. The concept of tinted picture windows are reworked not in glass but taut mosquito netting and are good to look at and through. In between, wood and glass doors open out onto large timber verandas.

In the bathrooms at Saruni, the net picture windows receive full expression,

with a floor to ceiling one at the front and the shower placed bang in front of it with no screen at all: marvellous for some fantasy communing with nature while you wash year hair. For the more body shy an optional drop down canvas blind is provided.

Rooms at Saruni have full power and lashings of hot water from great showers -

thanks to a good solar system (back up wood boilers have been installed for the shadier rooms). There's also a generator if all else fails - and from the sound of it (we were there after an unusually cloudy month), it's a monster.

The main mess at Saruni is large and open, with a wide deck such that the tantalising view lies before you, beckoning you down to the plains.

Eating takes place at a large communal table. To the other side are some cosier chairs around a fireplace. The library, in a second smaller little cottage next door has another great view, but you may not be looking at it as the books are so interesting.
