Now over a hundred years old, The Norfolk Hotel Nairobi has been a source of good solid hospitality to safari goers for a long time.

It's quite close to the centre of town and is nice and busy all the time with tourists and locals. It's been taken over by an international Canadian hotel chain, and it's five star so you can pretty well predict what you'll get.

No hospitality hitches, professional if impersonal service, a choice of restaurants with pretty good food, and non threatening rooms - they did strike us as a little on the small side, but perhaps one should expect that in a standard city hotel.

The Norfolk Hotel - is it for you?

Don't come here expecting to find White Mischief, because it's moved out of town. But if you like just a slight whiff of history with your mini fridge, firm standards and no surprises, this would work for you.

The best place at The Norfolk is the lobby which positively bustles -

on the day of our visit we were told they were hosting seven weddings, there were lots of business meetings going on all over the place and mud spattered (it was raining in the bush very heavily) tourists were wandering in and out. At the side of the lobby is the slightly theme park titled Lord Delamere Bar (just next door to the Lord Delamere Restaurant) which opens out onto the street. Despite the name this can get lively in the early evenings, as it's a favourite townie sundowner spot.
If you like this, why not consider these other camps in Kenya...
