Camel safaris are one of the things that Kenya does particularly well, and there are one or two people - Helen Defresne, Kerry Glen or Charlie Wheeler in particular - who will take you well off the beaten track if that's what you're after. Make no mistake, these are safaris where the camel is an essential means of accessing remote areas. These expeditions can be as real as you dare to make them. You don't need to be feeling too adventurous to get the benefit of a camel safari though. There are a number of camps that can offer camel trips for anything from half a day to several days, supported by a lightweight camp.Laikipia PlateauThe Laikipia Plateau wraps around to the northwest of Mt Kenya and is the last stop before the remote Northern Frontier District of Kenya. This is dry arid country that ultimately runs into the deserts of North Africa, so it's not surprising that, while they may not be indigenous, camels are put to such good use here. Much of the terrain here is fundamentally hostile to man, and many of the wilder parts are simply beyond the reach of wheeled vehicles. Camels provide the means of getting camps into the seriously remote parts of Kenya for those who really want to get away from it all, but there are a number of places where you can head out with a camel – or on it’s back – for a few hours or a day or two.
